iKLIP Stand for iPadWhile many of us use our iPad by holding it in our hand, it’s often nice to be able to keep it propped up without taking up any desktop space. This where the new iKLIP Stand for iPad by IK Multimedia fits the build. It acts as both a tabletop stand and a clamp-on riser depending on what you need to accomplish.

For Musicians and more

The iKlip Stand is designed primarily for musicians. You can perch it nicely, for example, on your keyboard, but it’s also tall enough to slip its base under it. However, It's also ideal for other applications and useful for others like speakers and presenters. Alternately, you might just want to simply keep your tabletop clutter-free or maybe use it to hold up your iPad as a second screen for your computer or notebook.

Like most of IK's products it's designed in Italy. It's made from a rugged and sturdy Thermoplastic with a metal reinforced base, so it can withstand the bangs and bumps. You can also adjust both the height and viewing angle and quickly flip from portrait to landscape mode.

What's cool about this product is that it offers two ways for it to sit on your desk. With it's U-shaped base, it can sit right on your table top or alternately you can swap the base with the supplied clamp-on accessory so you can attach it firmly on the edge of your table or desk. This is particularly handy for times when desktop real estate is at a premium and you need your iPad close-by, especially in live show environments. In clamp mode, you also get the added benefit of being able to rotate the stand a full 360 degrees.

Quick Assembly

iKLIP Stand for iPad The iKlip Stand for iPad has two separate hinge points with large knob screws so you can quickly and independently adjust the height and your viewing angle for maximum comfort. The second hinge is actually a pivot style ball-joint that helps you fine tune your adjustments even more, so you're not a slave to where you're sitting. We all know the kinds of strain our eyes and muscles can have if we have to awkwardly hunch over our desk to try to use our gadgets. While its large knob screws make it easy and quick to assemble, it’s just as quick to attach your iPad to it. You simply slide your iPad into the holder and IK’s sure-grip clips keep it snugly and securely in place. It comes with about a dozen pieces including the base and the clamp, but once you've assembled and disassembled it a couple of times, you should be able to be fully assembled in less than 20 seconds. There's also an illustrated assembly guide, just in case.

My only beef, and it's a minor one, is with the name of the product itself. IK Multimedia has quite an impressive range of nifty products, including many "stand" products for your iPad, but the names can sometimes be confusing especially if someone who may be buying it as a gift and not familiar with the intricacies of the various models. They might end up ordering the wrong one. My case and point; the iKlip 2 is a stand for iPad (2nd gen and up), but it's purpose is to clamp to a mic stand. iKlip Studio is also a stand, but its a desktop stand for propping up like an easel. This model, the iKlip Stand for iPad doesn't have the "2" designation but it's for iPad 2 and up. Do a Google search and you'll see what I mean.

The only other thing I would have like to have seen and this has been my position on many products that need to be assembled/disassembled, would be a simple carry pouch for those who would use iKlip Stand on the road. The shipping box does have a thin molded plastic insert, but it wouldn't likely stand up to a lot of abuse.

Bottom Line

Overall, this is one of the most versatile stands for the iPad that I've seen, whether you want it sitting on your desk or clamped to it. And whether you are a musician and need your sheet music in from of you or simply want to watch download a movie from iTunes or Netflix, this gadget is almost perfect.

iKlip Stand for iPad by IK Multimedia retails for $69.99 U.S. and is compatible with iPad 2 and up. It's also available for iPad mini for the same price.
