Star Wars and other tech inspired Father's Day gift ideas

Father's Day is just around the corner and picking the right gift can sometimes be a bit of a challenge. So here are a few gadget gift ideas that might pique your interest and help you find the special one for that special Dad.

BB-8BB-8 App-Enabled Droid

For the ultimate Star Wars Dad and at the risk of sounding cliché, the Sphero BB-8 App-Enabled Droid just might be the one he's looking for. More than just a toy, it's a Bluetooth BLE enabled interactive robot with an adaptive personality that evolves the more you play with it to give Dad virtually endless fun. It even listens and responds to voice commands like "Look Around,” "Wake up" and "Watch out" and like a pet BB-8 perks up when you talk to it. Order him around or even send him out on patrol and BB-8 will explore by itself.

Dad can even record and view a hologram.

Sphero BB-8 measures 11.4 cm high, 7.3 cm wide, weighs 200 g and can reach a top speed of 6.5 km/h. BB-8 plays for a full hour on a charge and when it's time to juice up pop BB-8 into its inductive Star Wars charger.

And if Dad already has Star Wars: The Force Awakens DVD/Blu-ray in his collection, BB-8 can watch along with him. Pop BB-8 on the couch, and through the “Watch With Me” App, BB-8 can watch too and even interact with the movie's animation and sounds.

Sphero BB-8 App-Enabled Droid retails in Canada for $189.99. It's available through many retailers including Best Buy and the Apple Store. It requires a later model iOS device running 8.0+ or BLE enabled Android devices running 4.2.2+.

HP Notebook Sleeve Star Wars MotifHP Notebook Sleeve Star Wars Motif

Inspired by the Dark Side dad nothing says more than Star Wars geek if he's walking around with the HP Star Wars Special Edition Notebook Sleeve. While it may not protect Dad's laptop from a full-on attack from the Rebel Fleet, this cool funky zippered sleeve with a durable scratch resistant exterior and padded interior should at least keep it safe from bumps and debris. It's designed for the HP Star Wars Laptop, but should work with any notebook up to 15.6". It retails in Canada for $44.99 and available from HPShopping.ca, London Drugs and Best Buy.

Xtreem Gravity 4D 1080p Video DroneXtreem Gravity 4D 1080p Video Drone

Our next choice for Dad is not a droid but rather a drone that he can take to new heights while keeping both feet on the ground. Swann: Xtreem Gravity Pursuit 1080p Video Drone includes a detachable camera and as the name suggests, can shoot full HD video and capture photos as well. It comes with a 4 GB microSD card that will give Dad a full 30 minutes of 1080 P video.

It's more than just a video recorder; it allows Dad to put his flying skills to the test. With four-axis control, imagine seeing him manoeuvring a drone in almost any direction, tumbling and performing 4D stunts. Imagine now the incredible picture or footage he could capture.

In addition to the drone and the camera, Dad will also get a camera mount, a fully featured 2.4GHz remote control pad with LCD display, SD card, card reader, battery charger and even some spare blades and parts.

Xtreem Gravity Pursuit 1080p Video Drone has a 9.13” rotor diameter measures 19.69" x 19.69" x 7.48" and weighs only 610 g without guards. It retails for US$299.99 directly from Swann, but can be found significantly lower on Amazon.

EyE-shaped Bluetooth Speakers with Smart Light

If Dad enjoys the portability of a wireless speaker but also likes to enjoy the memories of colourful lights of years past, he might really be thrilled with the Yantouch EyE. It's a new twist to the Yantouch Diamond+, we previously reviewed here at G4.

The EyE is a 3-in-1 wireless “Music+Light” portable stereo Bluetooth speaker. It features an eye-shaped speaker with a built-in Smart Light that can offer wall washing i.e. lighting a wall in 16 million colours that can also change hues and pulsate, following the beat of your music playlist controlled by the HueDJ iOS or Android app. If you have two EyEs, they can automatically pair together and you can enjoy true stereo sound separation. Once the party is over, Dad, can also use his EyE as a natural wake or sleep device.

The EyE has a 6" diameter and weighs 14oz. It has a built-in stand so it can be propped up or hung on the wall so it can be used as either a wall mount speaker or a dimmable reading light.

It comes with USB charging cable, remote control, and velveteen pouch to carry it around. It comes in various colours and retails for US$99 and available through Amazon.

Happy Father’s Day!
