'Avengers' assemble on Kinect

Until the Secret Invasion storyline in Marvel Comics, the alien Skulls were pretty much a joke in the Marvel Universe. The shape-changing aliens were more of an annoyance to super groups like the Fantastic Four and The Avengers except when they tricked out some of their race like The Super Skrull, who had all of the combined powers of the Fantastic Four.
What the Secret Invasion plot soon revealed is that everyone had taken the Skrull Empire a little too lightly. They had in fact been enacting a covert invasion of the Earth for many, many years. By kidnapping and replacing many of our beloved heroes and most powerful individuals, they had paved the way for a full-scale invasion the likes of which the Earth had never seen before.
With Ubisoft's new brawler - Avengers: Battle for Earth - fans can play through the storyline, told in vibrant comic book cutscenes. The impressive 20 character roster includes the more notable Avengers such as The Hulk, Iron Man, Hawkeye and Thor, and other heroes such as The Human Torch, Wolverine, Storm and your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man.
There are also some baddies thrown in for good measure too like Magneto, Venom and Doctor Doom.
Functioning much like their previous release - Powerup Heroes - Avengers is a fighting game using the Xbox 360 Kinect system and your body as the controller. As you fight through two round stages, more and more of the storyline is revealed and more areas, battles await you. The gameplay is very simple. If you kick, you kick. If you punch, you punch. If you point your fist as Iron Man, you fire a repulsor blast. If you do the same thing as Hawkeye, you will shoot arrows. You get the picture.
For each character's finishing move, you will have to say a heroic phrase as a cutscene plays to successfully complete the move. In actuality, you can speak utter gibberish and the moves will still execute properly.
As you get further into the game, the brawls become more difficult and combo, special attacks become more crucial. If you become tired of the campaign, you can fight your friends or others online.
Avengers: Battle for Earth is a no frills Kinect entry which, except for the sometimes irritating menus, works as advertised. The animations of all the Marvel characters are especially sophisticated and sharp as are their characterizations. Like the Capcom Versus Marvel fighting series, The game is definitely a what-you-see-is-what-you-get proposition. It is uncomplicated smash mouth action for those who like to clobber and smash.
