Being sent up the river is a challenge in more ways than one in The Escapists. A Kickstarter project developed and published by Mouldy Toof and Team17 released for the PC last year and now on consoles, The Escapists is a time management strategy game imitating daily prison life as best that a computer simulation can.
The goal is to pull a Burrows brothers and escape each prison as quickly and efficiently as you can. To accomplish this, you might have to do favours for other inmates and maybe take penalties associated with those dirty deeds, craft weapons and items, exhibit perfect timing to avoid guards and security systems, monitor the daily routines to find gaps in said security.
You have to accomplish all of this while going through the motions of your daily prison life which can include roll calls, free time, meals, exercising and working a job such as doing everyone's laundry.
Things can go wrong for you, very quickly if you aren't careful. Trips to the infirmary or solitary confinement can derail your crafty plans to escape the screws and regain your freedom. What is important to keep in mind is that there is more than one way to solve a problem and more than one way to escape.
Don't let the cute 8-bit graphics fool you. While the game does have a light-hearted tone throughout, each prison is a legitimate test of your resourcefulness, ingenuity, ability to think outside the box. Like Portal before it, The Escapists is a distinctive puzzle game that will truly challenge your powers of observation and deduction.
