New Blood provides new thrills

It is once more unto the breach for our hero Captain William "B.J." Blazkowicz.
Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, (the new stand-alone expansion pack) reverses the hands of time sending us back before the cataclysmic events of The New Order.
Disguised as S.S. officers, Blazkowicz and his O.S.A. agent pal Richard Wesley, infiltrate the infamous Castle Wolfenstein. General Deathshead is up to no good again. Teaming with archeologist Helga Von Schabbs, Deathshead is on the hunt for a supernatural weapon of mass destruction.
Inspired by cult films like Dead Snow, Shock Waves and Zombie Lake, The Old Blood is plays out in two intense acts.
During the first, the stealthy Wolfenstein incursion is anything but. Although you are encouraged to creep through Castle Wolfenstein's kennels, prison, murky tunnels and hallways with trusty pipe and knife in hand, invariably things will break down into a ruthless firefight. This is both challenging and frustrating as it only takes one simple mistake to alert the troops. That is easy to do especially since you will often think you have a line of sight for a sneaky one-shot kill only to discover you cannot fire through those rails, around a doorway or sets of steps like that without setting the alarm off.
The Old Blood's next chapter unfolds outside the castle in the village of Wulfburg where Von Schabbs is conducting her sinister excavation. Savage Nazi soldiers are swapped out for the merciless, shambling undead as the story ecstatically heads into B-movie territory. It is all very fun and very campy.
The Old Blood doesn't veer away in any way from the hallmarks which made The New Order such a success, it just enriches them. It is everything that I rated as 2014's Game of the Year in one, concise package.
The $24.99 price tag is certainly a steal for 8 chapters which amount to approximately 8 to 10 hours of gameplay, just be aware the install is approximately 37 GB.
Wolfenstein: The Old Blood
Rating: 8.5 / 10
