Mario and Luigi. Master Chief and Cortana. Sonic and Tails. Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong. Of all the video game duos, you cannot forget: Ratchet and Clank.
Bursting upon the scene in 2002, the budding Space Ranger and his robotic pal have appeared in approximately 12 titles over the years and this month are making the jump from the small screen to the big screen in their own feature film.
To celebrate, Insomniac Games has reimagined the pair’s very first adventure, which originally played out on the PlayStation 2, updating it for the PlayStation 4. Ratchet and Clank 2016, for lack of a better term, has not just been polished up with better graphics and gameplay. A portion of the story and game is brand spanking new.
In the original story, Ratchet and Clank are pitted against the evil Chairman Drek who wants to create a new home planet for the Blarg race of aliens. Unfortunately, that means wiping out other planets that just happen to be in his way. Without giving too much away, the 2106 story is slightly different with new elements and cut-scenes to support it. Dr. Nefarious, for example, was not in the first game but introduced in the third title: Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal and is the final boss battle not Chairman Drek. The original Blarg homeworld was Orxon not Quatru and the level is very different in this remaster.
In addition to its zany and irreverent sense of humour that had gamers spewing carbonated beverages from their noses, Ratchet and Clank is known for its vast array of cool and outrageous weapons such as the Glove of Doom, the Suck Cannon, the Walloper and Revolverator. In this redux, many of the weapons from the later games in the series have been included.
The way you upgrade those weapons with Rariatium is different as well, they level up as you blast enemies to Kingdom Come. By selecting different modification paths on the grid for each weapon, you can improve fire power, ammo storage, rate of fire, etc. You can therefore tailor each weapon to your specific needs.
Many of the destinations, a series of oddball planets with equally oddball inhabitants, are largely the same and so are their layouts but there are fresher game mechanics from the later games such as using the Thruster-Pack to fly around in certain areas and explore them more fully as well as space ship combat.
It is hard to improve upon perfection but Insomniac Games has done so. By tying in the most successful elements from all of their games, they have assembled a remastering that features the very best of Ratchet and Clank. While some of the elements may be duplicated, there is way more than enough new material to equally satisfy veteran fans interested in a possible replay and newbies who are experiencing all of the wackiness of the seminal platformer for the very first time.
